In this guide, Christine MacLeod from Weaver's Cottage in Kilbarchan, a National Trust Scotland property, talks you through the traditional tartan-making process.
You Will Need
- loom
- shuttles
- hook
- knife
- yarn
Top Tips
- One shuttle for each colour.
- The tartan's pattern has to fit the width of the fabric you are weaving and must repeat evenly all the way down.
- To finish the tartan you should wash it. Hot temperatures will "felt" the wool, making the fabric small and stiff. Cooler or cold temperatures will make the fabric very soft.
