Now, I'm going to show you how to use a wood chisel. Chisels come in all different shapes and sizes. You've got really thin ones for fine detail and you've got wider ones and you can get even wider ones than that and then a few in between.
So, I'm going to show you how to cut out a piece of wood. Let's say, there's a label here and you don't want a label or there is something wrong with that piece and you want to get rid of it and replace it with another piece of wood. Say, so you would need a hammer and your chisel.
So, you'd cut out the area you want to cut out first. So, we'd mark it out, all the way around. When you've got a longer grain, you don't have to bang it so hard because you're splitting the rhythm along the grain here, so you're cutting through the grain sideways, so you've got to bang a lot harder to go down the same depth and then you'd start on this end.
To start, got to move through here, so you can see there's an angle over here, so you get it to that angle and push it along. So there's a nice big chunk there. Now, go onto the other side.
Okay, then, we need to start to smooth it off and you check the depth; see how even it is and if you grab it with your hands, it helps to have more control. It's a bit more in this direction. If you hold your hammer sideways and bang like this, it makes it easier to tap with that and make sure you hit it exactly.
Clean up the end and just clean it up all the way around. Pretty good, that's one way to use the wood chisel, which is a very handy tool for cutting out all sorts of types of wood. That's how to use a wood chisel.
